Guidedogs Have Their Own Blog

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

I was very happy to come across a blog owned by Guidedogs For The Blind, which is the school I went too for my new dog Lars.

The school has 2 campuses, 1 located in California, the other located in Oregon.

When I went to train with my first guidedog, Luther, I went to the campus in California.

When I returned to Guidedogs this past November to train with Lars, I went to the campus in Oregon.

The campuses are very similar in a lot of ways, but the California one is quite a lot bigger than the Oregon one.

Funnily enough, the majority of guidedog users I know who went to Guidedogs For The Blind for their own dogs, went to the campus in California.

When I went to train with Luther, it was during the month of January, which for anybody living in California is a month with mixed messages of a summer to come, mixed with an Oregon rain storm!

When I returned this passed November to train with Lars I was treated to 2 weeks of rain, which I am told is normal for that time of year for the area.

Back to the blog, you should really check it out if you want a good dog read.

Posts on the blog discuss guidedog training, updates on puppies that are born at the California campus, and delve into guidedog issues that are prevalent to us blinkies.

Obamas Choose Portuguese Water Dog As Family Pet

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

After what has felt like a lifetime of anticipation the Obama family have announced their intent relating to their pet dog.

They will be welcoming a Portuguese Water Dog into their home, and are actively looking for a rescue pooch.

Labradoodles all over the country are up in paws over the news that they have been shunned by Obama, and a massive non-shedding pawtest is being organized.

In all seriousness, joking aside, is anybody else kinda tired of hearing about the Obamas and their pet dog dilemma?

About a million months ago, it was revealed that the Obama family would be getting a pet if Obama was nominated as the Presidential candidate blah blah blah.

About a thousand months ago, the Obamas revealed that they had narrowed their choice of dog breeds to 2, the Portuguese Water Dog and the Labradoodle.

Well now we know the breed of dog that the Obamas will be bringing into their home, and on that note I will nolonger mension it as I myself am sick and tired of hearing about it.

ps - For anybody wanting to check out a simple breed discription of this dog, look below at the

Stress Busting Tip of the Day: Watch Your Dogs Play

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

So as I was sitting this morning watching my 2 dogs playing tug of war, I started thinking about how the most simple act as we view it, can be such a source of pleasure for our pets.

Obviously we as humans do not play tug of war with each other as a source of enjoyment, but for the sake of an example, I could compare a good game of tug of war to us playing a good game of twister.

Lars, my new dog, is only 22 months old and is full of life. He will do anything for a toy, which for me makes it very easy for me to train him to do tricks due to his willingness to do anything for his bone, kong, rope, etc.

Luther on the other hand is nearly 10, and as much as I hate to admit it, is beginning to slow down a little.

Watching them play tug together, without a care in the world illistrates their personalities down to a T.

Lars does most of the work, pulling like a demon, while Luther, who has 30lbs on him, simply plods along not really caring that he is being schooled by a much smaller opponent.

Luther being the SmartPet that he is, has a way of tricking Lars into a false sence of security.

He’s more than happy to let Lars dominate the game, but every so often he surprises the little guy with a vicious head shake or a turn and scoot maneuver that results in him taking the toy away from Lars.

If you want something fun to do that does not require you doing anything major strenuous, go to a dog park and watch dogs play, it has a way of making you feel good.

If you are one of the lucky ones like myself who have a multiple dog household, take time and just watch your dogs play, it is very relaxful, to me anyway.

Found My E-Book Designer

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

So I have finally found a graphics designer to make my e-book look the way I want it to look.

I have had trouble locating somebody who I feel can do the work to a level that I would like, but I think, fingers crossed that I am in luck.

A first impression means the world, so obviously I want my product to look professional and well put together before I begin marketing it.

Hopefully I will be able to get this ball rolling sooner than later.

Clinton Cat Succumbs to Cancer

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

Some sad news from the pet world today as the cat belonging to the Clinton family has been euthanized after a lengthy bout with cancer.

Socks had been living with Betty Currie, Clinton’s secretary since 2001 and was the most recognized cat in America.

Socks was born way back in 1989, and died at the age of 18.

He was suffering from cancer in the mouth and jaw, and had been steadily losing weight over the last few months.

“Socks brought much happiness to Chelsea and us over the years, and enjoyment to kids and cat lovers everywhere,” Bill and Hillary Clinton said in a joint statement released by the William J. Clinton Foundation. “We’re grateful for those memories, and we especially want to thank our good friend, Betty Currie, for taking such loving care of Socks for so many years.”

Mickey Rourke Says Goodbye to Pet Chihuahua

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

In the latest celebrity pet news, the beloved chihuahua belonging to actor Mickey Rourke has gone to doggy heaven.

The dog, Loki was 18 years old, a good length of life for sure.

Yourke has been known as the 1 guy who totally loves his dogs.

He even thanked his dogs for helping him through the tough times of his life during his acceptance speech at the Golden Globe Awards held last month.

It is nice to hear somebody actually acknowledging dogs for the constant support they provide us, even if they do not even realize what they mean to us.

Teach Your Dog to Shake a Paw

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Teaching your dog to shake a paw is probably one of the easiest tricks for them to learn. This below method is how I trained my first dog Luther, and most recently, Lars to shake either their left or their right front paws, whichever I requested. For your dog to learn this trick quickly, it is always good to have treats to offer them, as we all know that dogs think with their bellies most of the time.

- Put your dog in a sit, you want to be kneeling in front of your dog.

- Utter the word paw while gently lifting one of your dog’s front paws up into the air.

- The second that dog’s paw is as high as you want it, treat him or her and verbally praise.

- Repeat this act a couple of times, no more. Dogs have very, very short attention spans.

- Throughout the day spend a couple of sessions of about 2 to 3 minutes performing this exercise with your dog, and sooner or later they will begin to guess what you want and perform the act by themselves.

I am working on figuring out how to upload video content so I can actually give you a look at how easy this trick is to teach. Hopefully over the next few days I can get some vids up and working.
