My Dog Jumps Up and Nips When I Give Him A Treat
I’ve gotten a fair number of emails over the last little while asking if there is a way to stop dogs from jumping up and nipping when they are receiving treats.
It is first good to know that dogs are not intentionally trying to bite you but are simply very excited over what you are holding in your hand and thus can be a little over zelis as a result.
There are, ways of insuring that your dog will not bite the hand that is trying to feed it, so to speak, some of these I actually have used with my own guy Lars.
- Before treating your dog, make sure that he/she is sitting calmly so to limit the likelyhood of them jumping up with excitement.
- When you first offer the treat to your dog, make a closed fist with the treat inside, and show your closed fist to your dog. Because the dog can not actually see the treat he/she will be far less likely to bite at your hand and will be much more likely to sniff it, looking for a way to access the treat inside.
- After your dog is sitting calmly and you have shown him/her your closed fist with the treat inside, slowly open your hand and let the dog take the treat off your palm.
By following these steps, you will very rarely have to deal with a jumpy dog come treat time!
