TPLO Day One Post OP
Bar has apparently come out of his drug induced haze to an extent as he is much more eager to get up and make me a nervous wreck.
It is quite the transformation from last night when he was reduced to a whimpering little baby lying on his bed, a thankful one at that as he was tearing my heart strings out, one after another.
He is toe touching when standing still, a great sign so soon after surgery, maybe a testament to the surgeon who performed the op?
When walking, he does not use the leg, but that is to be expected less than a full day post-op and most dogs as far as I know take a few days before they will test that boundary.
He lurches to his feet using three legs, and hops around the living room, taking his time between hops as if he is saying to himself, “hmmmm, doesn’t feel too bad today actually, shall I try another hop?”
Over time that bunny hop will turn into him gently testing the surgically repaired leg to see what it can withstand and the more he does this, the quicker he will be walking.
As for my role in Bar’s recovery, aside from making sure he does not kill himself, I’ve begun icing the knee, and will begin some passive range of motion (ROM) exercises with him when he shows the slightest ability to put weight on his leg.
My other role in Bar’s recovery is to be his personal pharmacist! Lars is on a painkiller, an antibiotic to prevent skin or bone infections and an anti-inflammatory medication.
